Where next for ‘Dance for the Screen’

The Dance for the Screen course and Dance on Film archive at the Place are both being ‘wound down.’ Some sad, sad news for the Dance and Moving Image and Digital Dance movements, there are some positive developments though. The first is that Alex Reuben remains in post as Head of the Post Graduate ‘Dance for the Screen’ course at The Place until December. The second is that discussions are being held about the possible continuation of the course elsewhere…fingers crossed something comes of it.

Frustrating, but perhaps not surprising, Contemporary Dance is commonly accepted as a poor relation in arts funding terms, with Dance and Technology even poorer still. An art form with eons to offer the creative community – it’s been left to flounder for far to long, with no stable infrastructure and few support networks in the UK. Let’s hope those involved can keep the course going and the collection together in the UK.

An art form in desperate need of a dynamic and forceful movement to get back in sync with contemporary experience and audiences – how else might we get to grips with physicality in our technologised world..
